A Book Review in The Times (London) and a Q&A on Wall Street Journal.Com

I recently had the opportunity to write an essay about WONDER WOMAN for The TIMES (London) which was great fun, and it made the cover.
Free Food For Millionaires was a selection for the Wall Street Journal JUGGLE Book Club, and there is a Q&A with the reporter Sara Schaefer-Munoz. I thought Schaefer-Munoz’s four essays on the book were marvelous and thought-provoking.

Dear Ms. Lee,

I identified with the personality of your character, Ella, more than any I’ve ever read in literature.  I was deeply moved by the book on a very personal level as a result. I am in my late 40’s, graduate of Mt. Holyoke and Harvard with a PhD. and found your book captivating.  I await your next book with great impatience and enthusiasm.  As a 3rd generation, feminist american Jew, I found it interesting to have so much in common with a culturally asian character and wonder if Ella’s and Leah’s submissiveness and gentleness, with which I so strongly identify, is common to Korean women.  The majority of my close friends are Japanese women, 1st generation american-japanese women, 1/2 Japanese women (with a Japanese parent), Thai and Korean women, or Jewish women married to Japanese men.  Perhaps we have something in common that your story somehow illustrates.  What do you think?  By the way, coming from 3 generations of Yale and a family of intellectuals who never made much money because jobs that are the money makers were considered beneath us, I am very sensitive to the experience of yours with feeling outside the world view of the standard, born to wealth or nouveau riche, WASPY, Ivy Leaguer.  It has been a concern of mine my entire adult life as I have had to make decisions about with whom to spend my time and what “circles” I prefer to orbit.  I too was married to a Ted, for reasons similar to those in your story.  I’ve begun calling my significant other, my “David Greene”.  Thanks so much for the enjoyment you’ve brought me and thank goodness Ella was able to pull her life together; I read her story with bated breath.

Best Wishes for Future Successes,
Abi Slayton
